Homemade Chocolate Paste by Emak Recipe

Rather than buying bottled-factory-made chocolate paste, here's an old fashioned recipe from my wonderful grandmother.

- chocolate powder
- sugar
- maize
- boiled water (or fresh milk)

Mix all ingredients, stir over simmering stove. Taste.
I do not put the amount of the recipe since there's none. :)
My grandmother used to say: use your feeling, then taste it.

Hehehe.

Changing the Bedsheets

Watering the Plants

Mosquito Herbal Repellent

In a middle of a night, a troops of mosquitos was attacking our bedrooms. We couldn't sleep. We stayed awake, listening the attack song and busy clasping palms of our hands without getting any.
Out of cajuputi oil (minyak kayuputih), we desperately trying to sleep. Suddenly I remembered, that we have this plant (picture above). I don't know the Latin name, Indonesian or even English for it. I just know it usage is for insect repellant.
I went down to get some Virgin Coconut Out, took some of the leaves, crushed them and viola! We had a homemade mosquito repellent!

Lagu Kebangsaan Indonesia

Clay sometimes learning Kurikulum Nasional as well, just to let him know about what his friends learn at national school here.
He should know the culture, history, geographic conditions about the land he was born in. Again, he should learn all the facts in a fun way.
Clay loves music, so CD is one of the most effective ways to start a topic discussion of Indonesia.

History: Making Castle

Clay is learning about past times. He learns a lot about medieval castle, lords and the past culture.
In this project, he learns about:
- patience
Needs sometime to print out, color and cut the small pieces one by one
- teamwork
He sometimes feel tired, bored and wants to quit this projects. It takes longer than he expected. Thanking Evan and Mom ready to give him a hand, is a real support for him.
I surely will post it when it's perfectly done as Clay's plan. He asked me to find the green felt for grasses. I still couldn't find it until now.

Binding an Airplane Booklet

Evan is learning about applied math in business world.
He printed out airplanes from a website, then he made a simple booklet and  again, tried to sell it to his big brother. :P
He learned about:
- basic capital (working equipments: papers, hole-punch-maker, printer, printer-ink, eyelets, etc.)
- manpower

The small notes written to calculate the expenses spent during the making process.

SuperEvan working on scratch paper

Evan is a thrift boy. As the youngest in the family, we can see that he always makes ways to earn money, even from scraps.
When he found one-side-used-papers, he made a simple notebook using the materials available around. He learned to re-use the paper, using the hole-puch maker properly and making tie knot. He did a wonderful job.
Cleaning the waste after the making process, leaving the working area clean as before. I love seeing him working independently! He's still 6 and can make a notebook from scraps for me!
Lastly, he offered me to pay for his hardwork, for 4 thousands Rupiahs. :P

Breaktime: Spiderman Clay and Superman Evan

They played together. The laughed together. Both of them get messy, smelly and happy. What would I ask more to see them get along very well, except thanking God?

Scrapbooking

This addicted hobby should have a warning label before someone tries doing it. I tried once, and cannot stop. One of the proof is that I neglected updating our blog. LOL.

Learning through mistakes...

Realizing there's something wrong with the process, we discuss that there's always some rooms for our mistakes. We enjoyed the pie happily though it's not perfect, compared to store-bought apple pie.  As our life is not perfect compared to others, we gratefully seeing our life as the best given from God. With all the ups and downs. The success and failure. This is truly what life is all about...

Our First Apple Pie

It's done!
The dough it's too hard to chew.. The apples are too soft.. The butter is not melted properly... but we LOVE the learning process and the fun making of it!

Put the dough in the pan

Evan already finished rolling the dough, then he put it in the 9" pan. He sprayed olive oil first before to avoid it stick in the pan.

Rolling the Dough

After washing the apples, now it's time to roll the dough. Not having a wooden roller, Evan used a clean glass bottle to roll it.

Five in a Row: Cross Cultural Understanding and Cooking

Time for Evan to learn about other countries in a fun way! This book is a marvellous story about traveling around the world to get the best ingredients to make an apple pie, which is actually, Evan's favorite fruit!
